WHERE CAN PHYTOREMEDIATION BE USED

Phytoremediation has been successfully used at a wide range of sites. It is, however, not feasible at every location. The selection and evaluation of what plants to use and how additives might enhance the specific process is complex. Some contaminants are more difficult for phytoremediation to be effective. Some sites can be remediated in as soon as two years and some take a significantly longer period.  But there are several examples of successful full remedies, including the following:

-       Petroleum and related sites

-       Explosives and their residues

-       A whole range of polychlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon locations

-       PCB contaminated sites

-       Long-term residual radioactive waste

-       Heavy metals in some cases, but every location has to be assessed since the metals behave differently with different plants

The list keeps growing in new studies published monthly as this approach is rapidly going to commercial scale. Another application is waste water treatment which has been proven in many cases to be a good candidate for phytoremediation.

The only way to make an intelligent decision is to provide the details in our questionnaire and have our experts review your site data. Frankly, we do not think that a responsible manager can dismiss phytoremediation without such an assessment, since it is so much more cost-effective and environmentally-friendly than the alternatives.
